Men's 2s Season Wrap

For the 2018-19 season, the Men’s 2nd XV set themselves the target of going one better than their 2nd-placed finish in last year’s Surrey Championship. With perennial Camberley effectively promoted to the Zoo Sports Shield, it was there to be won, with the strongest ever 2s squad there to deliver.
Under the captaincy of both Ollie Corbett and, latterly, Dan Hyde, the season started without the anticipated on-field statement, with a home walkover against local rivals, Old Emanuels. Not deterred by this early forfeit, the team went into the halfway point unbeaten, including impressive defensive stands away to Warlingham and at home to likely rivals, Law Society. Whilst mid-season celebrations were welcome and well-earned, its unlikely that the Rugby Pod will be wanting the team back anytime soon.
The five week break over Christmas almost caught the team leaden-footed, travelling across town to our training grounds at Rosslyn Park for some Friday Night Lights to kick off 2019 in style. As is befitting of such a spectacle, the team left it to the last quarter to pull off an improbable come-back win, leaving with clear eyes, full hearts and a 22-17 win, keeping them in pole position at the top of the table.
The year continued as it started, with both an unblemished record and an unfortunate string of walkovers. Missing out on invaluable match preparation before the playoffs proved costly. An expansive 46-17 demolition of Old Reigatians was followed by a uncharacteristically flat-footed display against an unfamiliar Old Haileyburians team in the final. Despite the league shock, the team pulled together for a final against Farnham, taking on a team one league above, running out 22-21 winners thanks to a last-minute try from Charlie Websdale.

Despite ultimately not coming away with the title, credit is due to all who played this season. Particular thanks goes to the entire pack, who allowed the halfback pairing of Peter Wilkin and Joe Shakespeare the platform to unleash a ferocious backline, including George Thompson (Player's Player of the Year) and Kieran Hollis (Captain's Player of the Year).
