Men's 3s Season Wrap

The Men’s 3rd XV were in a fortunate enough position to retain much of the core of the team that made the league playoffs the previous year, putting them in a position to challenge both in the Surrey Conference North as well as the cups. As with the 2’s league, a number of walkovers to begin the season gave Dave Proctor's team little chance to build early momentum, finishing 2018 with a particularly painful 26-20 loss away to Bec Old Boys. 2019, however, proved to be a very different story.
As new partnerships and understandings formed, so did the results. A 37-10 away win to Old Cranleighan’s 2nd XV started off an unbeaten league run that would take the team all the way to the playoffs, a run that – importantly – included a 76-0 shutout of Bec down at DSP. Success had also extended into a decent opportunity in the cup competitions, with a final against the Roslyn Park Nomads to look forward to after the league playoffs.
Despite a mid-season rally, and finishing just 2 points off of top spot in the league, the playoff picture was going to be one that was unlikely to feature DSP and the coveted home advantage. A strong league performance away against Mayfair Occies to wrap up the season was repeated in the semi-finals, taking the team away to KCS in the final. Despite going down by 2 against an extremely robust King’s team, the result demonstrated how the team had progressed since losing on The Hill in December.

Key performers for the 3s were found across the pitch, with a pair of antipodean imports, Andy Turbane and Tom Pilkington (Player’s Player of the Year), joining established players in Niall Hurley (Captain’s Player of the Year), Bernie McCusker and Joe Kubik in delivering performances both on and off the field. 2019 welcomes a new captain in Ross Lynam-Carter, and a fresh crack at silverware.
