Men's Vets Season Wrap

With club stalwart Nigel Radcliffe taking charge, the Men’s Vet’s team was once again expected to be a capable, if not occasionally under-manned, addition to the Surrey Veteran leagues. Frequent Friday nights away in distant corners of Surrey tend not to attract too many crowds, despite the quality of rugby often on show. However, 2018-19 in the Surrey Vets 2 division proved different for the Ironside Vets, with 60 players pulling on the jersey over the course of the year, with interest growing as the season progressed.

A slow start to the year saw the team go down to established veteran teams from Guildford, Farnham and Old Cranleighans, despite a hattrick of good performances. The Christmas break saw the team holding onto 5th spot, with the turn of the year seeing a tremendous upturn in results. At times benefitting from five (!) former 1st XV captains on the pitch at the same time, impressive away wins against well-established Esher and London Irish Amateurs teams saw the team wrapping the second half of the season up in second spot, winning 4 of 8 fixtures, a brace of walkovers and, more importantly, only unable to rouse a XV on one occasion. Rounding out the year with a trip to the Surrey Cup Finals day saw another display of champagne, pack-centric rugby in another hard-fought encounter against an excellent Farnham team. Despite coming home without any silverware, strong performances from Gerald Roper (Legends Player of the Year) and Scotty Barr (Captains Player of the Year) kept the team in contention with a well-established and well-drilled opposition.
