The Ironsides Memorial Match 2019For this season’s customary Ironside’s season opener, it was the turn of Ross Lynam-Carter’s 3rdXV to take on the combined legacy and U21s squad for the annual Memorial game. Coming together for a minutes silence after the 1s & 2s victory over Old Colfes, Guy Newman’s Legacy XV soon took an edge in a physical and hotly-contested affair.
Showing what a few years of university rugby can do, the ‘home’ XV established an effective foothold with their pack, giving their loosies an excellent position from which to attack, with Joe Juran and Yohan Tefisi at 8 and 6, respectively, joining George Astopilides in bombarding the 3s defensive line. Despite the industrious work of McBrier, Pilkington and Pugh in the 3s backrow, the Legacy XV were the first to cross the whitewash, with Callum O’Brien of the U21s placing down after a sustained period of patient attack. A neatly-slotted conversion from Jordan Richardson put RLC’s men 7-0 down mid-way through the half.
Not a team to give up on a promising start, the Legacy pack continued to show guile and strength beyond their years, with the set piece and backline joining the forwards in delivering, with Astopilides finishing off after some slick handling and powerful running, leaving the 3rdXV trailing 14-0 mid-way through the 2ndhalf. Taking the chance to blood some more of the up-and-coming U21s, Finlay Wright came on into the backrow, with George Clark joining him in facing up to a loose trio of 3s with more than just a couple of 1st XV caps to their names. Whilst giving up more than a few pounds in weight and a decade or two in experience, the intensity of the affair didn’t subside.
This year’s 3rd XV continued to show the dogged behaviour that dragged them up from a challenging start in 2018 to title favourites by the time the season wrapped up, and Lynam-Carter’s 2019 team continued this trend of refusing to give up. Coming a little too late to change the result, their quality of rugby eventually told, with Tom Pugh wrapping up the game, 14-5 to the Legacy XV.
As always, thanks to all who came down to support what is an extremely important part of the Ironsides Rugby family, and we look forward to seeing you for the 2020 fixture.
